One of the greatest films by one of the greatest silent-film comedians plays this weekend at the Dartmouth Film Society in Hanover, N.H. Girl Shy was the first feature Harold Lloyd produced after his not-so-amicable split with producer Hal Roach (who would later produce the Our Gang — aka Little Rascals — series). Clearly, Lloyd felt he had something to prove, as Girl Shy (especially in its famous last scene, a wild chase through the streets; see image below) features nonstop comedy of the highest order.

It's hard to dislike this film, which is not only hilarious but historically important. Girl Shy is one of the very first Hollywood romantic comedies. A fine way to kick off this esteemed genre.

This screening will feature live piano accompaniment by Bob Merrill, the Hop's longtime silent-movie accompanist, who is guaranteed to further enliven the show. Seven Days profiled Merrill in October 2013; check out the story to learn more about the man and his music.
