The Week Ahead: May 13-19, 2013
Legislative adjournment? Ha! It's ain't over till the fat lady sings — by which we mean those svelte legislative leaders, Shap Smith and John Campbell.
Here's what's happening in Vermont news and politics this week — sure to be the last of the legislative session. Got a newsworthy event for next week's calendar? Email by Friday to submit.
Monday, May 13
- The Legislature couldn't wrap it up on Saturday as planned, which means lawmakers are back in Montpelier for another two days. The House hits the floor at 10 a.m. to take up the latest versions of several bills, including marijuana decriminalization and physician-assisted death-with-dignicide. The Senate's on at 10, too.
- Congressman Peter Welch is in Vermont today and at 12:30 p.m. he'll be making a "business visit" to the Alchemist Cannery in Waterbury. When you can't find any Heady Topper on the shelf this week, you'll know who to blame.
- In Burlington, there's a Board of Finance meeting at 5 p.m. in city hall conference room 12, followed by a city council budget work session at 6.
Rest of the week after the break...
Tuesday, May 14
- The legislature is supposed to wrap it up today and adjourn. We'll see...
- At 10 a.m., the Senate Judiciary Committee — the one chaired by our own Pat Leahy — continues its work marking up the big immigration reform bill.
- A brew pub in the Moran Plant? An urban gondola over Pearl Street? Visions for Burlington's waterfront take center stage at a "public investment action plan deliberative meeting at Burlington City Arts at 5 p.m.
- That whole Burlington-redistricting-so-as-to-avoid-a-lawsuit thing? Next meeting is tonight at 7 p.m. in city hall auditorium.
Wednesday, May 15
- Burlington Mayor Miro Weinberger is live on Channel 17 at 5:25 p.m. Watch it.
Thursday, May 16
- Mayor Miro's participating in something he's calling a "multi-modal tour" that's scheduled to last for three hours (!) starting at 9 a.m. in front of the city hall. Details on the publicity stunt — er, tour — to be announced this week.
- Another Burlington City Council budget work session — 6 p.m. conference room 12 at city hall.
- Author Sue Halpern reads from her new book, A Dog Walks Into a Nursing Home, at the Vermont Book Shop in Middelbury tonight at 7 p.m.
Friday, May 17
- Live at 5:25 p.m., the folks at True North Reports TV host a show on Channel 17 on "conservative environmentalism." Drill, baby, drill? Watch it.
- Pundit time! Watch Stew Ledbetter and crew on "Vermont This Week," 7:30 p.m. on Vermont Public Television.
Saturday, May 18
- Goddard College is hosting an alternative media conference, with liberal fave Thom Hartmann, Seven Days' own Cathy Resmer, and many more. Starts at 8 a.m. Full schedule.
- Vermont Progressives converge on Barre's Old Labor Hall at 12:30 p.m. for a state committee meeting. Political reporters take note: by Friday, with the Leg adjourned, this will look like a pretty decent story.
- Are there lessons the U.S. can learn from Denmark when it comes to health care, education and environmental protection? Would we be asking this question if there weren't? Today at 1 p.m., Sen. Bernie Sanders, America's favorite Democratic socialist, hosts a town meeting with Peter Taksøe-Jensen, Denmark’s Ambassador to the United States, at city hall auditorium in Burlington.
Sunday, May 19
- Bernie's Denmark-palooza continues today, with the senator and the ambassador doing an encore town meeting at Montpelier High School cafeteria at 10:30 a.m. And like any good Bernie event, it comes with brunch. Coffee and Danish, perhaps?
- Rebroadcast of "Vermont This Week" at 11:30 a.m. on VPT.
