Masters of Suspension When Rodgers and Hammerstein’s beloved Broadway musical The Sound of Music came to the silver screen in 1965, marionettes got pride of place in the enchanting “Lonely Goatherd” sequence. The Salzburg Marionette Theater, based in the Austrian city where the film is set, goes one step further and offers a full puppetry version of the musical classic. The story, of course, follows the Von Trapp family’s experience with an ex-nun-turned-musical-governess, with whom the Captain and his brood would relocate from Austria to Stowe. Master puppeteers bring wooden figurines to life, with some surprising stage tricks. Will Maria ride a bicycle? And will the seven marionette children stage a puppet show themselves, featuring a tiny yodeling field hand? See for yourself at the Flynn this Tuesday
