</spothead><spotbody>Burned out on shopping and gift swaps? It may be time to kick back and poke fun at festivity. Both before and after the 25th, the Langdon Street Café hosts “X-mess” entertainment arranged by Montpelier-based arts advocate and general jester Ben T. Matchstick. Singer-songwriters Anaïs Mitchell and Abby Jenne headline an all-girl Bob Dylan tribute titled Just Like a Woman, the band Sputnik inspires impromptu ’80s dance moves and “ballistic mistletoe,” and kids try their hands at puppetry during a special open mike. Other offbeat offerings include a granola-themed ballet spoof called Nutty Cracker Sweet, an office-supply-centered Boxing Day party and, um, freestyle gift rapping. Three dollars in quarters deliver coin-op glad tidings from the café’s cigarette-machine-turned-cheap-art-dispenser (pictured), also featured on MySpace. Stocking stuffers? ’Nuff said.

</spothead>Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead puts minor characters in Hamlet at center stage. But what was happening “behind the scenes” of the nativity? The Monteverdi Music School and the Vermont Opera Theater co-present a touring production of Amahl and the Night Visitors, an opera that fills in some of the Bethlehem backstory. In the show, originally composed in 1951 for U.S. television broadcast, a disabled boy and his mother host three strange men overnight. The kingly trio turns out to be the Magi on their way to visit Baby Jesus. The ending has similarities to Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol”: Like Tiny Tim, Amahl experiences a miraculous recovery. Expect moving arias sung by the principal characters, with backup from a chorus of shepherds.
