Gee, what a surprise! Seven Days readers still like Lake Champlain! Last year the winner for "Best attraction for out-of-town guests in summer" was the Burlington Boathouse. This year it's the Burlington Waterfront. Pretty much the same thing. And those water-and-mountain views never grow old, we agree. When winter arrives, though, seems like everyone wants to take their guests -- and their sliding gear -- to Stowe. The charming locale also won a Daysie for "Superlative snow slope" and "Best Vermont weekend getaway." Skiers of the cross-country persuasion, however, prefer Catamount Outdoor Family Center in Williston.

Catamount was also runner-up for two-wheelers, but couldn't break the hegemony of the Burlington Bike Path. When it's tee-up time, Seven Days readers seem to prefer Vermont National, though last year they loved Rocky Ridge -- are golfers fickle about their fairways? Guess we'll find out next year.

The truth is, there's pretty much no bad place to go in Vermont -- but if you must get away, some of our readers strongly recommended Montreal.

MAKING A SPLASH Burlington's Waterfront handily took first place this year for "Best attraction for out-of-town guests in summer." It's a little ironic that much of the view is in New York, but whatever. While nature gave us a gorgeous lake and mountains vistas, let's give human credit where it's due: to the planners, politicians and developers who replaced a former debris-scattered wasteland with a boathouse, a sailing center, a bike path, a fishing pier, a skatepark, a lake-science museum, a theater, and a vast, grassy playground from which to enjoy the number-one attraction: the scenery. IT'S STOWE TIME What can we say? Everyone seems to love Stowe, whether vertically inclined outdoors or relaxing horizontally inside the spa. While this year's Daysies make Stowe the winter winner, the village's numerous restaurants, galleries and boutiques make it a delightful destination all year round. But we'd still like to know: Where do the locals get away to? PHOTO COURTESY OF YANKEE IMAGE/SKYE CHALMERS
