In the cyber age, endless information can be found in a jillion places, but when it comes to local print, radio and television media, we tend to seek out the usual sources. Once again readers gave it up for Seven Days political columnist Peter Freyne (best journalist); WCAX Ch. 3 (best TV newscast); and Champ 101.3 FM -- both for Best Spot on the Radio Dial and for the station's ever-popular morning men, Corm & the Coach. Also known as Steve Cormier and Tom Brennan, the latter share their third -- or is it fourth? -- Daysie for Best Local Radio DJ.

On the Web, of course, "local" kind of loses meaning -- though not at vermontdailybriefing.com. Host/commentator Philip Baruth earned a Best Vermont Blog Daysie for his acerbic political observations of the Green Mountain State. In keeping with the format, we ran this competition exclusively on Seven Days staffer Cathy Resmer's blog, 802 Online -- 7dblogs.com/802online/. OK, we actually forgot to put the category on our original survey, but whatever. Won't happen again. In any case, denizens of the Vermont blogosphere -- and there are more than you can imagine -- have spoken.

Speaking of politics, Bernie Sanders and Peter Welch will no doubt be delighted to learn that Seven Days readers have handily ushered them both into office -- next Vermont U.S. Senator and Congressman, respectively. With any luck those virtual votes will translate to actual ones come November.

We can't forget Tom Messner -- how could we? The WPTZ meteorologist is a perennial Daysie winner for Wisest Weather Watcher, and he even takes time out from forecasting (more rain?) to come to the party! (We probably should have asked him about important things like global warming; what we really wanted to know is: Who's his dentist?)

What do you tell people who blame you for bad weather?

I remind them, "I'm just the Messner -- I mean, the messenger."
Oh, and then I program StormTracker 5000 to rain on their neighborhood!

Bernie Sanders
Burlington/Washington, D.C.

What was the most egregious act of self-aggrandizement you've witnessed by a government official since you've been in office?

Time and time again, President Bush has made it very clear to Congress and the American people that he believes he has the authority to act outside the law. From his efforts to use the National Security Agency to monitor domestic phone calls and emails without judicial oversight, to his misuse of signing statements to circumvent laws enacted by Congress, this president has repeatedly ignored key principles of our democracy. This abuse of power is unacceptable. No one, including this president, is above the law.

What do you listen to when you're not in range of your own radio station?

It takes me a lot of miles to get outside our coverage area. I've got to go to Concord, New Hampshire, to get out of Champ range. I have to be on a plane to get out of signal range.

Vermont Daily Briefing
by Philip Baruth

Last year just a few dozen readers named their choice in this category -- some of them even asked, "What's a blog?" But times have changed: This year more than 300 web-savvy folks voted online for Philip Baruth's 10-month-old Vermont Daily Briefing, at vermontdailybriefing.com. A Burlington novelist, University of Vermont English prof and VPR commentator, Baruth tackles politics both local and national from an unabashedly leftist perspective. His colorful candidate interviews and cheeky reports of campaign gossip win big with the local chattering class. And what's not to love about posts entitled "Lamont Kicking Much Lieberman Ass" and "Tarrant Openly Taunts Workers: 'It's All Mine! Whoo!'"?
