From From Sudden Noises from Inanimate Objects: A tall skinny man in a pale blue tuxedo stood in the yard with his back to me and a rifle in his hands, not far from a derelict swing set so rusty there was no telling what color it had been. Other composers might shake their fists at the heavens, as Beethoven did on his deathbed, but Silber had a horror of mere empty gestures: he pointed the gun skyward, took aim, and pulled the trigger. It was a BB gun and not a real rifle, but real enough for the crow in Silber's sights. The bird fell backward off its perch (as the luckier flew off in a rush of wingbeats) and dropped with a thump to the spotty yellow lawn that looked like what might live above a leaky toxic landfill. Nothing else grew in the yard, though there were half a dozen tree stumps. [...]
