It has been a real pleasure interacting with Marilyn over the last 30ish years from my first pair of pearl studs purchased at the Jelly Mill with tip money from waitressing at Francesca's to helping her with a certain ring of signifigance at Grannis Gallery, the jewelry shop I owned with my late husband Timothy Grannis, 15 years later. She has always known how to dress me. Her gracious manner and amazing eye kept me coming back.
Best of luck Marilyn, you will be sorely missed.
Stenger, Quiros , Shumlin,Leahy,Sanders all are getting away with this "con"..all are throwing each other under the bus or saying " I didn't know anything about this"..All are liars who got their pockets filled..who all pushed for this to happen..Yup sell Vermont to the highest bidder, give big money and get a "forever green card"..The ones who were hurt by this is the people of the Northeast Kingdom..The rich politicians don't care, they just walk away with money in their pockets..
If you made it to the bottom of the article, this episode from the summer is likely also of interest to you. https://soundcloud.com/wintry-mix-cast/bur…
It is the same sentient when everyone was referring to this as "Kingdom Con". as a native Vter and one who grew up in the Kingdom I found it offensive to the kingdom
You're right, Mike. We've updated the story. Thanks for pointing that out.
Just for your information, Bill Stenger is NOT a native of the Northeast Kingdom. Big shots have to be imported.
I wish this talked a little bit more about how so many employers illegally categorize their workers as exempt when they don't pass the test of "administrative, managerial, or professional" and how most of these workers have no idea that this is wrong. I was illegally classified as exempt for about 10-15 years of my career in the nonprofit sector, and my husband is illegally classified now, before this change, AND is required to work overtime. My understanding is that Obama made this rule change to address this common practice. It's not enough just to pay them $47k. The positions also have to pass the other tests.
40 hour work week? Farmers and other self-employed workers are laughing hysterically at that.
The exempt labor threshold was only reduced in 2004 under Bush, who was trying to please corporate America by allowing them not to pay overtime. The change in the threshold is only rectifying a gift to employers that should never have been given. Of course, now with the flimflam pro-business Trump in the White HOuse, one has to wonder how long this correction will last.
Nothing on how employers have colonized workers' entire lives in the digital age.
Nothing about how fair labor practices actually grow our middle class, produce wealth across generations, and lead to long-term economic sustainability.
Finally, no historically contextualized account of how this change in law attempts to restore a sensibility about robust labor rights that was actually the primary feature of the mature, mid-20th century industrial economy in the United States.
I'm not reading news here that is directed at residents of the United States who possess any notion of social justice, political economy, or historical perspective.
Lord bless them. They work hard for low pay. I was in that business for several years. A tough way to earn a living.
His photography involving homeless people is exploitative. His photographing young women stealthily is actually really unsettling when you witness it firsthand. When approached about his photographing an unwilling subject he often becomes defensive and slightly belligerent. He's not an artist, he's a voyeur and he exploits homeless people. Dude is seriously problematic.
Green Mountain bought Keurig, not the other way around.
The only problem with this story is that Ben Katz is a LIER. He never questioned me about the stolen items that day like he claimed. The day after the investigation a different police officer came to my office and asked me point blank did you do business with this Fish guy we looked in my books and I showed him where I had a photo of of him and a picture of the stolen property that they were able to use that information to charge the thief. The guy that wrote the story that works for seven days also was told by my lawyer that this part of the story was a lie but he chose to write it anyway. The agenda was to pass this bill to regulate people buying jewelry. Unfortunately they pass the bill and now it's not being enforced with many other jewelry stores, antique dealers, auctioneers, secondhand dealers, buying jewelry not signed up as precious metal dealers and it seems like no one really cares so while a few of us are following the law taking photos of jewelry and IDs, affidavits of ownership license plate numbers holding for 10 days others are not .
These are funny! I think my dog needs all three. It's sad how crazy this election has gotten. To help calm the craziness and make the election more colorful in a good way - my small business has added candidate paint by number kits to our inventory. Maybe the calming effects of painting will help people keep their cool :). you can check out our kits at www.wehgo.com.
my neighbor was laid off back around XMAX from a $30K job, does not want to work, the state takes care of them, unbelievable, nice people but........
You've said it best. No unions and no high paying jobs in Vermont. It's as if nobody feels they deserve to make money. It's the perfect scenario for somebody with money from outside of Vermont to come in and manipulate the situation to make even more money. If you're looking for a dollar store to come in and create minimum wage jobs then that's exactly what will happen.
Most Dollar General Stores appear in small communities that are very under served by any store. They provide a very needed way to get many items and save money. I'm tired of the self righteous types that don't like certain outlets. Fine, don't patronize them. Obviously, they are filling a niche that was unfilled. They provide jobs and pay taxes. What's the problem?
Half of working Vermonters make $12 per hour or less. They have to shop somewhere. If my choice is Dollar General or a Mom and Pop shop that charges 3 times as much for the same items, I'm going with Dollar General.
Pacilio is urging tenants not to shop at a store right across the street from them? Really?
My wife shops there maybe once a week, and we are not poor, maybe that is why. A bag of kitty litter for a buck, vs whatever Hannaford can get away with. If they obey the law they have a right to be here. But communities should negotiate with them never the less for the best terms and suitable location. I doubt they will put a really good country market out of business or even close, apples and oranges
