Re: “Y Close Winooski? Gym Was a Drag on YMCA's $22 Million Fundraising Goal

The Winooski Y could stay open if the admin heavy staff of over half a million a year were cut. But they are he ones making the decision...so no surprise.

Re: “Y Close Winooski? Gym Was a Drag on YMCA's $22 Million Fundraising Goal

12-Step programs have a daily reading inspirational card and one reads - do three good deeds today without being found out, if any one of them is - it doesn't count.

I agree with Mark Lade, does every philanthropist have to boast about their giving by having their name on a building, an article in the press or on the news?

Why isn't making someone else's life a little better enough, why do they always have to boast about it and make it public. Egotistical. It turns me off.

Re: “Y Close Winooski? Gym Was a Drag on YMCA's $22 Million Fundraising Goal

It is the center for many educational programs, exercise, nutrition, fellowship and located in a melting pot neighborhood, it helps to keep the kids off the streets, while providing a good "walk to" gym AND instills the importance of moving your body at any age. It is sad that the closing of this worthwhile facility is paying the cost for a bigger and better Y situated in Burlington. Can't the city of Winooski step in and run it as the Winooski Rec Center and give residents something healthy and FOR THE PEOPLE that live and pay taxes in Winooski instead of only the F-16's and the F-35's?

Re: “Y Close Winooski? Gym Was a Drag on YMCA's $22 Million Fundraising Goal

The cost of running the Winooski Y seems to be about the same as two highly paid execs that don't do much anyway.

P.S. Do you really have to call it the Pomerleau Family Y?

Re: “Fixer-Upper

This is such a great piece Paula, glad I found this gem on Facebook. I've always wanted to hear more about Stu's colorful real estate empire, it's an inspiration. Thanks!

Re: “A Backyard Evaporator for DIY Maple Sugaring

This type of barrel evaporator (pans cut into the top of a horizontal drum) has been around for years (just look you YouTube). I love the entrepreneurial aspect, but am slightly concerned that someone can find an open source project like this, take the idea, and throw a patent on the "way it looks".

Re: “A Backyard Evaporator for DIY Maple Sugaring

Good job guys. I used to have 70 maples back in the day which my neighbor tapped in Dummerston (among 2000 other taps). Wish I did now good luck

Re: “Village Embraces Rail in Bid to 'Put the Junction Back in the Junction'

One train a day is a all cost operation. The way to increase ridership and have more volume to lower costs per rider is to add service. The Vermont could cut more travel times with Tilt Train equipment! They Tilt on those old flat curves with faster running times. Without very high speed.

Re: “How Did Dollar General Stores Take Vermont So Quickly?

If you live in shanty town you may accept a Dollar General going up within in view of your shanty. The way they slip in secretly under cover and suddenly appear where they are not wanted, where it does not make sense to milieu of the community and the instant property devaluation of the homeowners nearby is insipid, sinister, disgraceful, un-American. Capitalism is fine but subversiveness is not, yet that is how they operate. I am watching it progress as they are about to destroy a beautiful stand of oaks on a scenic stretch across from lakefront homes owned by families for generations. Coming to an unlikely unexpected pop-up location across near your house soon.

Re: “Clothier Marilyn Gaul to Close Shop

It has been a real pleasure interacting with Marilyn over the last 30ish years from my first pair of pearl studs purchased at the Jelly Mill with tip money from waitressing at Francesca's to helping her with a certain ring of signifigance at Grannis Gallery, the jewelry shop I owned with my late husband Timothy Grannis, 15 years later. She has always known how to dress me. Her gracious manner and amazing eye kept me coming back.
Best of luck Marilyn, you will be sorely missed.

Re: “Can a Scandal-Tainted Hotel Save Q-Less Burke Mountain?

Stenger, Quiros , Shumlin,Leahy,Sanders all are getting away with this "con"..all are throwing each other under the bus or saying " I didn't know anything about this"..All are liars who got their pockets filled..who all pushed for this to happen..Yup sell Vermont to the highest bidder, give big money and get a "forever green card"..The ones who were hurt by this is the people of the Northeast Kingdom..The rich politicians don't care, they just walk away with money in their pockets..

Re: “Can a Scandal-Tainted Hotel Save Q-Less Burke Mountain?

It is the same sentient when everyone was referring to this as "Kingdom Con". as a native Vter and one who grew up in the Kingdom I found it offensive to the kingdom

You're right, Mike. We've updated the story. Thanks for pointing that out.

Just for your information, Bill Stenger is NOT a native of the Northeast Kingdom. Big shots have to be imported.

Re: “About Time? New Overtime Rule Worries Vermont Employers

I wish this talked a little bit more about how so many employers illegally categorize their workers as exempt when they don't pass the test of "administrative, managerial, or professional" and how most of these workers have no idea that this is wrong. I was illegally classified as exempt for about 10-15 years of my career in the nonprofit sector, and my husband is illegally classified now, before this change, AND is required to work overtime. My understanding is that Obama made this rule change to address this common practice. It's not enough just to pay them $47k. The positions also have to pass the other tests.

40 hour work week? Farmers and other self-employed workers are laughing hysterically at that.
