When Bill Watterson was hired, 5 of us drivers went to him through the OPEN DOOR policy. Tim Bradshaw was present at that meeting. We spent over 2 hours telling him of our issues. He spoke of "Working together as a team", "I cant have drivers going out on the road to do their job with stress from inside", There's definitely a divide of distrust between the departments. I cant build the best transit authority if we have this divide. I NEED good drivers. We have to find a way to work this out and get rid of the distrust."
Yet, NOTHING! Nothing has changed. Its gotten worse and after that meeting, we drivers haven't seen or spoke to him. He gave a similar speech in a meeting where we were going over survey results. It was pointed out to him then, that there's been no change and he has done nothing. To read that he found this stuff out through the media is laughable!!!!!!!
I am very sad that it has come to this. Its VERY VERY far from being the best Transit Authority! The drivers are making a stand and its the drivers AND the public that are paying for that stand.
"Scheduling is a very complex system." Really? Its so complex that they've admitted they haven't updated the software for 5 YEARS!! How do you let the heart of the bus lines operate without the needed UPDATES?? The system, Hastus, has become known as "Hostage" to us drivers. Fare boxes breaking down EVERY DAY! One driver said "How can you keep buying new when you cant even fix the old?" And again, who pays? Us and the public! Bad routes, bad schedules, late connections = late passengers, disgruntled passengers, etc. We have a Labor Management Committee which includes 4 drivers and 4 managers. Bill W. and Tim B. are among those managers. They want to re-name the committee to the "Scheduling Committee." They do NOT want us to have ANY say in ANYTHING but that! As its been stated from Management "You aren't here to run the company."
We drivers understand what the impact will be if we strike. WE are taxpayers as well. WE see what's going on and we are shot down every time! We have now reached the end of our rope. One thing we have learned through all of this is there's no TEAMWORK here!
As I said, its very sad that its come to this AGAIN! All we want to do is come to work, greet our passengers with a smile and do our job and then go home.
Have you ever heard "Don't make your people do what YOU YOURSELF wouldn't do?" Maybe the only way to get Bill W. to understand what we have been trying to tell him is to have him work one week, on the bus, under the same conditions we have to work under. I wonder how that would end up.......
