Re: “Contest for Votes Spotlights a Changing Winooski

Clem Bissonnette and Ken Atkins are downplaying the extent of their intense intolerance towards the GLBT community, and personal human rights in general. Turns out, they voted multiple times against gay marriage, as well as the civil union bill before that. How disdainful and narrow-minded of them to vote against the personal freedoms of a large number of their own constituency? Winooski is proud to count a large and thriving GLBT population among its diverse inhabitants. In fact, Winooski’s own City Manager is gay! It’s evident that these elderly men would deny her the right to marry if they had their way!

Additionally, they have repeatedly demonstrated their disregard for their own constituent’s welfare from the projected environmental impact of the F-35 basing in Winooski by their continued support of the decision. They continue to fully support the bomber/fighter basing in our densely-populated residential neighborhoods, despite the USAF’s prediction of the enormous damage that the F35s would disproportionately inflict upon Winooski. Atkins also voted against a fracking ban for the state, and lobbied heavily in Montpelier as a private citizen last spring against all of Burlington’s proposed common-sense gun restrictions. Do these positions sound to you like they are in the best interests of Winooski and Vermont?

Both Bissonnette and Atkins have also both voted in the past to restrict young women’s access to reproductive services. With the very scary trend in other states to restrict or deny women’s reproductive rights, we simply can’t run the risk of representatives from our city who would vote this way. They both voted against the “death with dignity” end of life decision laws. Yet despite their voting records to the contrary, they glibly state that they have “generally supported most Democratic priorities”?

Let’s see, they have voted against marriage equality rights, civil unions, reproductive rights, medical marijuana use, decriminalization of marijuana, end of life rights, and against the personal health, safety and property rights of Winooski citizens from the F35 noise impact which will cause over half of our houses to be deemed “not suitable for residential use”, and Atkins is heavily pro-gun rights and supports fracking in Vermont.

Just who ARE they representing, anyway? From their records, they have made it clear where their priorities lies, and it is NOT with the best interests of Winooski and its residents. At least, not if you believe in ensuring personal liberties and working towards improving Winooski’s future.

Enough is enough! Time for a change in our little City with new representatives who will truly reflect today’s Winooski and protect its future, as well as the dignity and rights of its residents.

Vote Gonzalez and Millar! It’s time for a CHANGE!!!

Re: “Pomerleau Gives $1 Million to Boys and Girls Club of Burlington

It is especially wonderful for Burlington's minority and refugee populations to have Mr. Pomerleau's generous help, but why does his generosity come to a screeching halt when it comes to the future of these same populations in Winooski? Pomerleau & Co. have been the lead proponents for the flawed F-35 basing in VT, which will significantly and disproportionately damage the vulnerable populations of Winooski children, minority and refugees. The most damaging effects will be borne by the least able to protect themselves, especially infants and young children. How about showing the same concern for the future of those children as you do for the B&GC youth? With his money and power, and Pat Leahy for a nephew-in-law, Pomerleau could influence the USAF to rescind the decision in the same way that his group pressured them to inappropriately decide on Burlington in the first place. What do you say, Mr. Pomerleau? How about spreading your caring and concern to ALL of the area's targeted at-risk populations, instead of being the reason for the demise of those who are unfortunately just in the way of your favored project, the F-35 basing?
