The numbers are not in our favor:
Average 20 oil trains per week with up to 100+ cars per train, rolling beside the lake That's over 3 MILLION GALLONS per train and 60 MiLLION a week.
6000% increase in oil transport by rail in the last 6 years nationwide.
Derailments continue to occur and are on the increase.
What can we do?
Get rid of the DOT-111 "pepsi cans on wheels," NOW. Canada already has. There is little argument that the cars are unsafe. They are largely owned by the oil companies who don't want to make a change. It will take regulation at the federal level.
Contact Leahy, Sanders and Welch. This can't wait.
