Re: “Institute for Social Ecology Marks 40 Years of Anarchy

If I may add some nuance to Mr. Kelley’s characterization of my presentation, I’d like to note that my focus was on what we have to learn from families who are deschooling, or unschooling, about why so many young people are alienated from the educational process. Yes, the national standardized testing and textbook industries have a stranglehold on educational resources, but my point was that these monies could be redirected to materials, resources, and educational activities that would really engage young people in learning. As a teacher educator for decades and author of books on democratic leadership and defending public schools, I remain committed to the democratic promise of public schools, but I believe that we must do substantially more to make them places of creativity, engagement, relevance, social justice, and democratic practice. In fact, I spoke favorably of Vermont’s new initiative around personalized learning and expressed optimism that this will be successful in engaging young people and their communities in the kinds of learning experiences that will do just that.
