Never liked VPR's I'm so cool pretense. Never had nor will give a penny in donations. I'll listen to public radio out of New York state.
I really don't see a news story here and wish that more relevant pressing issues occurring locally could be covered by Seven Days.
The original constitution of the Vermont Republic (1777) allowed foreign born men who resided here to vote and participate fully after one year and taking an oath. When Vermont became a state, it still allowed all residents to vote up to the state wide level until 1828 when a nativist movement starting to restrict voting. It wasn't till a VT Supreme Court ruling in 1863, that the right for non citizens to vote at the state and local level was confirmed. Still in the cities and towns across the state that had many immigrants coming in, there were many exceptions like Barre, Pawlet, Springfield, Bellows Falls, St. Albans, etc.
Though it may have been caused by an act of cruelty on those cliffs, the system failed her and at a young age, she is lost to us all, especially her children. When we will ever learn.
Having a special needs child, I'm really tired of people in the comment section using the "low IQ bigotry" it's just a replacement of the R word and Seven Days should realize it. That this is now the tenor on social media means we don't get a variety of opinion, just insults that would never go over in our household. I look forward to the gift of debate and discussion.
Another part of the corrupt city machine. What I wouldn't give for a Dept of Justice investigation to come up from Washington DC and go after these folks, and I mean more than just Burlington Telecom.
Re: “Vermont Dems to Hire Staffer for Burlington City Council Races”
The City Hall machine represents less of the interests of ordinary people and more of corporate developers. Until the Democratic party in Burlington gets its independent local sense of enpowering people back again, I look forward to more seats going to Progressive endorsed candidates. And Ward 4 is changing to a more diverse community and also very happy Wright will become a private citizen and leave the political representation to someone who can operate with transparency like Carpenter. I hope to wake up the day after Town meeting 2020 and see a veto proof city council.
