Re: “Buy Local: Wealthy Vermonters Go Big on State Elections

To all the 7D readers who are frustrated about the facts laid bare in this article: We're in a spending war. If we don't like the pay-to-play system, we need to overturn Citizens United. Until then, local folks with funds and integrity will always be compelled to spend $$ instead of letting huge out-of-state political donors unduly influence our statewide elections. If the "high net-worth individuals" of Vermont sit by with hands folded while national special interest groups purchase political clout way beyond the power of the average VT voter or group of voters, we all lose. The Koch PAC isn't a person, it doesn't live in or visit Vermont, it can't be my neighbor, it can't grow old and die; it doesn't need healthcare, clean air/water, or decent housing. (And technically, it can't vote.) But it does have an agenda provided via its funders, and very deep pockets ditto. Because Citizens United is still national law, our only alternative at this point seems like a throwback to the Gilded Age: Hope that individual well-meaning Vermont residents with an interest in the state's future and the courage of their convictions are willing to back up what they say with hard-earned dollars from comparatively deep pockets, to keep the other, bigger, non-alive special interests at bay. That's currently how things get done, and that will remain true until campaign finance laws are reformed.
