If recited in its entirety, Homer’s epic The Iliad would take nearly 24 hours to complete. It’s a good thing Denis O’Hare and cowriter and director Lisa Peterson have distilled the monumental work into the Obie Award-winning solo show, An Iliad. Nine years in the making, the drama the Guardian deems “stunning for its nuance, tenderness and concrete detail” serves up gory battles and Greek gods alongside modern-day references. An informal tone and contemporary language anchor O’Hare’s narrative and effortless shifts between major characters. This approach creates an accessibility that illuminates mankind’s magnetic pull toward chaos and violence, regardless of the time period.
