Indigo
Runner-Up:
Stephen & Burns Salon, Spa and Boutique
Burlington salon Indigo has been in business on Battery Street since 1998, but owner Stephen Bevilacqua has been involved in the hair industry since 1975. A lot has changed since Sonny and Cher were on television, Bevilacqua notes. And not just styles, but the workforce, too. Thirty years ago, many young adults considered hairdressing a last-ditch job, he says; now, “we’ve got better employees coming in with college degrees.” Bevilacqua, who employs 32, places a premium on ongoing education for his team — there’s a lot to keep up with in this “growth” industry.
SEVEN DAYS: What is the worst thing people do that damages their hair?
STEPHEN BEVILACQUA: Trying to do their own hair [color] at home. The chemicals really dry it out.
SD: Why does society have such a thing against women with gray hair?
SB: Oh, we get that all the time! I don’t know, really. I guess everyone is looking for youth. Personally, I love a head of white hair.
