Every year, the American Society of Newspaper Editors and the Sunshine Week coalition ask Vermont's Sen. Patrick Leahy to pen an op-ed on the public's right to know. As some media junkies may recall, one such op-ed contributed to the firing of former AP Bureau Chief Chris Graff several years ago. That op-ed in question was a toughly-worded piece about the secretive nature of the Bush administration.
This year's op-ed focuses on some of the recent legislative changes made by Congress, as well as some of the ongoing challenges facing those who want to see a more open and transparent government. The Democrat's senate office just released this year's op-ed for us to share. Enjoy.
Fresh Victories For The Public's Right To Know

There is reason to hope that an era of greater openness is coming. As we mark this fifth annual Sunshine Week, some of the recent clouds obstructing the public's right to know are giving way to more transparency. The American people are beginning to get a better glimpse of how their government works — or sometimes doesn't work so well.
