VT Blog: Vermont Commons

Posted on Tue, May 3, 2005 at 12:58 PM

The indefatigable secessionists of the Second Vermont Republic have at long last begun to blog. It was only a matter of time. Every week I check my Seven Days mailbox, and there's a new press release from them. Hopefully now that they've embraced 21st century technology, they'll no longer need to waste paper and a stamp and can send their missives via email.

Their new blog is called Vermont Commons. It's associated with a monthly journal of the same name. So far it's been written entirely by Rob Williams, a writer, musician, and multimedia producer who lives in Waitsfield, and is the president of the Action Coalition for Media Education.

In yesterday's blog entry, Rob invites everyone to come to tomorrow night's debate on Vermont secession between UVM professors Alfred "Tuna" Snider and Frank Bryan. It's at 7 at the Royall Tyler Theater, and it's free. I mention it because Tuna's an iconic, charismatic guy, and a fantastic speaker. I'm going if I can tear myself away from my mountains of work.

Since 2014, Seven Days has allowed readers to comment on all stories posted on our website. While we’ve appreciated the suggestions and insights, the time has come to shut them down — at least temporarily.

While we champion free speech, facts are a matter of life and death during the coronavirus pandemic, and right now Seven Days is prioritizing the production of responsible journalism over moderating online debates between readers.

To criticize, correct or praise our reporting, please send us a letter to the editor. Or send us a tip. We’ll check it out and report the results.

Online comments may return when we have better tech tools for managing them. Thanks for reading.
