Seven Days needs your support!
Give NowShawn Conley and Steve Pernicka, volunteers from the Northern Vermont Chapter of the Red Cross, are on their way to aid survivors of Hurricane Katrina. They've set up a blog called Notes from the Scene. Last night, they were in Little Rock. This morning, they were 120 miles North of New Orleans:
On the roads things are tense, as we entered Louisiana people weretrying to flag us down to get help but we had to keep moving. We haveto admit that there is an increasing sense of tension in the area. There is no gas at gas stations - in fact we just saw a fist fight at alocal pump over remaining supplies, and food and water are running low.
They'll be posting their account as they're able. Thanks, Cool Blue, for the link. For more information, contact the CommunityInvolvement department at the Chapter by calling 802-660-9130- ext. 104or by e-mail at [email protected].

Since 2014, Seven Days has allowed readers to comment on all stories posted on our website. While we’ve appreciated the suggestions and insights, the time has come to shut them down — at least temporarily.
While we champion free speech, facts are a matter of life and death during the coronavirus pandemic, and right now Seven Days is prioritizing the production of responsible journalism over moderating online debates between readers.
To criticize, correct or praise our reporting, please send us a letter to the editor. Or send us a tip. We’ll check it out and report the results.
Online comments may return when we have better tech tools for managing them. Thanks for reading.
