The Week Ahead: March 25-31, 2013

Posted By on Mon, Mar 25, 2013 at 10:08 AM

Here's what's up in Vermont news and politics this week. Got a newsworthy event for next week's calendar? Email by Friday to submit.

Monday, March 25

  • It's legislative breakfast day! At 7:30, Lt. Gov. Phil Scott gives a mid-session update to the Randolph Chamber of Commerce at Gifford Medical Center (then rides something called the "Maxi Taxi.") And at 8:15, Gov. Peter Shumlin is in St. Johnsbury to address the Northeast Kingdom Chamber.
  • Live at 11, Reps. Terry Macaig (D-Williston) and Jean O'Sullivan (D-Burlington) are on Channel 17. Watch.
  • At noon, University of Vermont prez Tom Sullivan will be on "Vermont Edition" to talk about his first year in office — and what he's doing to keep UVM "affordable" for Vermonters. Listen live.

Rest of the week after the break...

Tuesday, March 26

  • From the "boring but probably important" file: At 6:30 p.m., the Burlington Planning Commission holds a public hearing for feedback on a series of proposed changes to the city's development rules — stuff that could affect what property owners can do to their homes.

Wednesday, March 27

  • At 7:10 a.m., Shumlin is on "Charlie, Ernie and Lisa" on WVMT 620 AM.
  • At 8 a.m., Burlington Mayor Miro Weinberger holds court at the Bagel Café for his weekly "Mornings with Miro."
  • At 11 a.m., Shummy holds his weekly press conference in his Statehouse ceremonial office.
  • At 5:25, Weinberger does his live show on Channel 17. Watch.

Thursday, March 28

  • At 8 a.m., Weinberger is on "Charlie Ernie and Lisa."
  • At 8:30 a.m., deciminalizing pot is the topic in the House Judiciary Committee and Public Safety Commissioner Keith Flynn is the star witness.
  • At 10:30 a.m. 9 a.m., the House and Senate meet in a joint session to vote on reappointing seven superior- court judges and one magistrate.
  • At noon, Shumlin is on "Vermont Edition." Listen live.
  • At 6 p.m., Weinberger goes on WCAX for an interview about his first year in office. Then, at 9 a.m., Hizzoner pitches a tent for the Spectrum Sleep Out on the Unitarian church lawn. Don't forget the camping stove, brah.

Friday, March 29

  • At 8:30 a.m., newish Vermont National Guard Adjutant Gen. Steven Cray testifies about, among other things, sexual assault in the Guard before the House Committee on General, Housing and Military Affairs.
  • At 9:30 a.m., Shumlin appears on "The Mark Johnson Show" on WDEV 96.1 FM.
  • As always, catch the week's politics with Stu Ledbetter and crew on "Vermont This Week" at 7:30 p.m.
Sunday, March 30
  • Burlington is throwing a First Annual Queen City Chili Cookoff and Weinberger will be there at 2 p.m.

Sunday, March 31

  • As always, WCAX talking-heads show "You Can Quote Me" at 11 a.m.
  • "Vermont This Week" rebroadcast at 11:30 a.m.
