The NBC affiliate for northern Vermont and upstate New York could be getting new digs.

A new 23,500-square-foot television studio has been proposed in Williston on Marshall Avenue. The occupant would be WPTZ-TV, also known as NBC5, according to Williston planning director and zoning administrator Ken Belliveau.

The town Development Review Board is scheduled to hold a preliminary review of the proposal at its January 23 meeting.

An application filed with the town describes broadcast studios and offices. It includes a roughly 80-foot tower with a microwave dish to send the TV signal to another tower on Mount Mansfield for broadcast throughout the region.

The studio would be located at 1491 Marshall Avenue on what is now a vacant lot in an industrial district. It would include 100 or so parking spaces and up to 14 ground-mounted satellite dishes.

NBC5 general manager and president Justin Antoniotti did not immediately return messages seeking comment. The Hearst Television station currently has offices in Colchester as well as Plattsburgh, N.Y.

The application identifies Marshall Realty as proposing to build the studio with representation from Nedde Real Estate in Burlington. Owner Doug Nedde did not immediately return a call seeking comment.

Belliveau said that in discussions about the application, WPTZ has been identified as the occupant of the studio.

The proposal is in the early "sketch plan" phase, Belliveau added. One question is whether the configuration of the tower conforms to town regulations.

A more detailed set of plans and engineering studies would be needed should the proposal advance to a full review.
