Bernie Bits: Sanders Talks Pot, God and Electability on Jimmy Kimmel

Posted By on Thu, Oct 22, 2015 at 10:11 AM

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) suggested Wednesday that he would be open to legalizing marijuana if elected president.

"You know, I'm looking at what's going on in Colorado and elsewhere," Sanders told talk show host Jimmy Kimmel. "But I am not unfavorably disposed to moving toward the legalization of marijuana."

The Vermont independent made the remark at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, where the Los Angeles-based comedian has been taping ABC's "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" all week.

Sanders frequently talks about ending the so-called war on drugs. He supports legalizing medical marijuana and decriminalizing pot. During last week's Democratic presidential debate, he said that if he were a resident of Nevada, he "suspect[ed]" he would vote in favor of an upcoming ballot measure that would legalize it in the state. But Sanders has thus far refrained from issuing his full-throated support for nationwide legalization.

Larry David Impression Prompts Bernie Sanders to Talk Underwear

Posted By on Sun, Oct 18, 2015 at 11:58 PM

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) wants to talk about the issues. But on Sunday, thanks to comedian Larry David, he found himself talking about his underwear.

On this week's Saturday Night Live, the irascible Brooklynite famous for his work on Seinfeld and Curb Your Enthusiasm delivered a brilliant sendup of the irascible Brooklynite famous for running for president. During the show's cold open, David appeared as Sanders in a sketch skewering last week's Democratic debate. Channeling Sanders' unmodulated intensity, he immediately pledged to "dial it right up to a 10."

"We're doomed!" David-as-Sanders shouted. "We need a revolution! Millions of people on the streets. And we gotta do something! And we gotta do it now!"

What happens when you refer to the audience of America's most popular movie — a movie about a Navy SEAL, no less — as "very angry" and as card-carrying members of the Tea Party?

You piss off Lieutenant Dan. And nobody wants to piss off Lieutenant Dan.

That's exactly what former governor Howard Dean did Friday night when the discussion on HBO's "Real Time with Bill Maher" turned to American Sniper, the Clint Eastwood action flick that brought in more than $200 million in its first 10 days in theaters. After Maher referred to the film's hero, Navy SEAL Chris Kyle, as a "psychopathic patriot," Dean said the host made "a very interesting point."

“There’s a lot of anger in this country, and the people who go see this movie are people who are very angry. And this guy basically says ‘I’m going to fight on your side,'" Dean said, referring to Kyle. "I bet you if you looked at a cross-section of the Tea Party and people who go to see this movie, there’s a lot of intersection.”

Sanders Talks Presidential Politics With Colbert

Posted By on Tue, Nov 18, 2014 at 9:30 AM

In an appearance on Comedy Central's "The Colbert Report" Monday night, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) achieved the impossible: He looked like he was having a good time.

Sanders, who typically vacillates between stiffness and anger, ably parried with faux-conservative host Stephen Colbert over socialism, Denmark and even Sanders' status in Vermont's congressional delegation.

"First of all, as a 73-year-old man, how does it feel to be the junior senator?," Colbert asked. "Do you ever shake your fist at Pat Leahy? Say, 'Get out of town, old man!'"

"No, he's doing just fine," Sanders said with a laugh. "He and I are pretty good friends."

"But compared to you, he's like Rush Limbaugh. He is so right-wing," Colbert said. "He's a Democrat. You're a socialist. That's the bogeyman of Washington. Do you frighten people when you walk around the Capitol? Are they afraid you're going to take their tractor and give it to the whole village?"

Any reporter who's tried to interview Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) knows that what he hates more than anything are questions about Bernie Sanders the Human Being. If such an entity, in fact, exists.

As Mark Leibovich put it in his excellent 2007 profile of the recently sworn-in senator:

Sanders crinkles his face whenever a conversation veers too long from this kind of “important stuff” and into the “silly stuff,” like clothes and style. “I do not like personality profiles,” Sanders told me during our first conversation.
So props to Mark Halperin and John Heilemann — the first-rate political journalists who brought you Game Change — for revealing another side of Sanders on their new Bloomberg TV show, "With All Due Respect."

Which side, exactly, did they reveal?

Sanders Tells Disruptive Members of Town Hall Meeting Crowd to "Shut Up!"

After anti-Israel protesters shout him down, the senator tells them to shut up. Sanders' staff call the cops.

Posted By on Wed, Aug 20, 2014 at 7:11 PM

Interrupted repeatedly at a town hall meeting last weekend, an irate Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) yelled at disruptive audience members: "Shut up!"

The meeting, at Cabot's Willey Building Auditorium on Saturday, grew so heated that Sanders' outreach director, Phil Fiermonte, called the cops, according to Vermont State Police spokeswoman Stephanie Dasaro. Four troopers arrived partway through the event, but took no action.

"They basically were just there as a presence," Dasaro said. "Other than that, we didn't get involved. There was no disorderly conduct. No one was arrested."

A seven-minute video of the meeting was posted to YouTube Sunday by Marie Countryman, a Montpelier activist:

Burlington City Council Eschews Drama, Re-Elects Shannon as President

Mayor Miro Weinberger gives the annual State of the City address to the City Council. - ALICIA FREESE

  • Mayor Miro Weinberger gives the annual State of the City address to the City Council.
The newest incarnation of the Burlington City Council elected its president Monday evening in a surprisingly conciliatory fashion. Leading up to the election, there had been murmurings about an alliance among the non-Democratic members that would seek to claim the council presidency. That group appeared to have the upper hand: Last year, after an extended stalemate between Democrat Joan Shannon (Ward 5) and Independent-turned-Democrat Karen Paul (Ward 6), the council struck a deal, agreeing that Democrats would cede the leadership seat the following year in the event of another stalemate.

The conditions were ripe to invoke that deal this year. Republican Kurt Wright (Ward 4) said he had rounded up all seven non-Democratic votes: “I had the ability to be elected. The votes were there.”

But on Monday night, Progressive Jane Knodell (Ward 2) — a longtime friend and political ally of Wright’s — nominated Shannon for a third year at the helm, lauding her dedication and fairness. And she, along with the other four Progressives, Independent Sharon Bushor (Ward 1) and Wright himself, joined in to unanimously reelect Shannon. Shannon described Knodell’s remarks as “so very nice and unexpected.”

Why squander the chance to take control of the council — as the agenda setter, the president can hold significant sway — from the majority? After about a week of behind-the-scenes back-and-forth between the Ds and the non-Ds, Wright said he backed down on the condition that the same deal apply next year.

Video: Shumlin Talks Heroin on ABC's 'This Week'

Posted By on Mon, Feb 10, 2014 at 7:20 AM

Gov. Peter Shumlin made his Sunday morning talk show debut this weekend with an appearance on ABC's "This Week."

The topic? You guessed it: Vermont's "full-blown heroin crisis."

Shumlin appeared with guest host Martha Raddatz, ABC News correspondent Dr. Richard Besser and journalist Seth Mnookin, who wrote last week in Slate about his own struggle with heroin addiction. The segment segued from actor Philip Seymour Hoffman's death by heroin overdose last week to Shumlin's State of the State address, in which he focused on Vermont's "growing epidemic" of opiate abuse.

Here's the video (and here's the transcript):

Video: Sanders Gets All Up in Bachmann's Grill

Sanders stars in a feisty cable TV debate.

State of the union? Booooooring.

If you're lookin' for a good (political) time tonight, we recommend you skip that snooze-fest of a speech and watch this clip of our own Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) appearing alongside — gasp! — Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.) Monday night on CNN's  "Situation Room."

Here it is (with apologies for being slow on the uptake):

After you're done watching, repeat after me: "DO YOU SUPPORT A CHAINED CPI?"

Calm down.

Donkey Dean Stars in "Truly Bizarre" Video by Former Senate Candidate

Posted By on Fri, Oct 18, 2013 at 8:39 AM

Thought you'd been subjected to every lame Howard Dean scream joke imaginable?

You thought wrong. Allow us to subject you to one more.

Nevada politician Sharron Angle, who unsuccessfully challenged Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) in 2010, has produced what Politico's Emily Schultheis is calling "a truly bizarre video" featuring Dean's hair-raising shout.

We agree with her assessment.

Schultheis reports:

The one-minute YouTube video, which evokes echoes of Carly Fiorina’s 2010 “Demon Sheep ad,” intersperses video clips of Democrats talking about major issues with short clips of donkeys doing the “Dean Scream” — the WWE-style yell that helped tank former Vermont Gov. Howard Dean’s 2004 presidential bid.

Angle's super PAC, OurVoicePAC, posted the video to YouTube in March, Schultheis reports, but the ex-candidate is only now starting to promote it. And there's really nothing more to say about it than this: It's totally weird and you should watch it.
