Winner:
Lyric Theatre Company
Runner-Up:
Vermont Stage Company
WHAT A SHOW
It’s no surprise Seven Days readers gave a standing ovation to the 37-year-old community theater company. Every year, about 400 locals volunteer their time to make Lyric’s two splashy musical productions happen on the Flynn MainStage — which means that any Chittenden County resident who hasn’t acted, danced or sung in; sewn costumes for; or publicized a Lyric show probably knows someone who has. While professional Vermont Stage Company — the first runner-up in this category — has won acclaim for its inventive, small-scale productions, Lyric has stayed big, satisfying local appetites for an evening of old-fashioned song and dance. With a 2010-11 season featuring the family-friendly Peter Pan and the dark satire Chicago, the players seem set to continue their tradition of offering a little something for everyone.
