As the music industry continues to hemorrhage money, artists need to find new and innovative ways to support themselves. So how about a techie twist on the public-TV-telethon model? Singer-songwriter Gregory Douglass, 29, is giving that a shot with a series of weekly house concerts broadcast live online via the streaming-video website Justin.tv. Douglass plays songs, takes requests and chats with viewers during the webcast, intermittently soliciting donations to finance recording his next album. “I wanted to do it up PBS style,” Douglass says. “If you really want to see the artists you love sustained, you have to consider yourself a patron of the arts.” Douglass is also taking donations through his record label’s website, Emoterecords.com, where, in the spirit of transparency, he’s posted his entire budget for the new album. Look for Douglass’ fan-financed disc in early 2011. In the meantime, you can get your fix of his stunning voice and evocative songs every Monday night at 9 p.m. at justin.tv/gregorydouglass.
