The food is cooked to order at QTee's, in the old Dairy Queen on North Winooski Avenue in Burlington, and it's gonna stay that way, according to co-owner Kathryn Goguen. The business began operating as a Dairy Queen in 1945. Goguen's parents bought it in '59; mother and daughter still run the place together. Recently, the Dairy Queen chain instituted a cooking-policy change; Goguen had four years to decide whether to go along - or go indie with a new name.
Goguen went her own way, and a non-compete clause forbids her from openly advertising burgers or ice cream for a full year. Until then, Goguen plans to close up shop at 7 p.m. each evening and won't be open on Sunday.
What food items can she talk about? "I have crispy chicken, roast beef sandwiches and clam baskets," she lists. "Everything you could possibly think of." And if you want something that's not on the menu, she suggests, "just ask."
