Spotlight on Camp ForMe

Meeting the exhibitors of the Kids VT Camp & School Fair

Posted By on Fri, Feb 1, 2013 at 10:06 AM

Camp ForMe is among dozens of camps and schools exhibiting at the 16th annual Kids VT Camp & School Fair on Saturday, February 2, 10 a.m.-2 p.m., at the Burlington Hilton. At the fair, representatives from each exhibitor will present detailed information about upcoming offerings, and answer questions from parents and potential campers. Our “Spotlight” series offers a sneak peek at participating programs.

Most campers find common ground within a few days of meeting each other. Camp ForMe, held at Stowe High School, is different. All of the kids attending the day sessions already have something big linking them together: They’re adopted.

“We don’t do a lot of talking about the fact that everyone’s adopted,” explains camp director Amy Chambers, but the mutual bond creates a built-in atmosphere of support and acceptance.

Seven- to 12-year-olds participate in traditional day-camp activities, ranging from arts and crafts to ecology programs to outdoor games. Thirteen- to 17-year-olds in the Teen Leadership group become mentors to the younger kids and partake in some off-site fun, such as rock climbing at Petra Cliffs and alpine sliding at Stowe Mountain Resort.

All of the camp programming fosters the growth of the boys and girls who attend each summer — many of them returnees.

“Lots of kids have been attending this camp for a really long time,” says Chambers. “They look forward to it.”

Camp ForMe is a weeklong day camp for adopted boys and girls in Vermont. Sessions take place from July 8-12 and July 15-19 at Stowe High School, from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Visit camp4me.org for more information.
