First Fests '06

Some years are easier to ring out than others. Lots of folks can't wait to get rid of 2005. Whether 2006 bodes any better is another matter. But if the new year brings good tidings or bad, New Year's Eve promises full plates of family-friendly entertainment at First Night celebrations.

You know the drill. Buy a button, pin it to your warmest coat, and tramp around town dabbling in a variety of alcohol-free events. The most ambitious program is in Burlington, where 12 hours of activities range from art-making and face painting to a memorial tribute to Burlington singer-songwriter Rachel Bissex and a spiritual welcoming of the New Year. Vocal enthusiasts lend an ear to Bella Voce, Maple Jam or Womensing. Reggae fans get irie with Lambsbread, Bluesiasts swing with Jenni Johnson and folksters tap along to Patti Casey and the Bluegrass Gospel Project. And all that barely scratches the surface. Fireworks in Waterfront Park happen twice, at 7:15 and at midnight.

In Montpelier and Rutland, the action gets underway at 3. Capital City celebrants can learn the score from the Green Mountain Youth Orchestra, then pick up the beat with Shidaa African dance before settling in for a reading by local novelist Thomas Greene. Lasagna supper provides stamina for watching the parade and early-bird fireworks, from 8 until 9. Rounding out the evening, the Starline Rhythm Boys play until midnight -- then send everyone home to collapse.

Rutland revelers might start out with ice skating, then move on to an impersonation of a bygone author, do some dancing or take in a concert in their choice of styles and settings. Parents with little kids can opt for the 8 o'clock fireworks -- right after the Noise Parade -- while traditionalists can stay out until 12.
