Project Porchlight Looking for Volunteers

Published May 23, 2008 at 8:57 a.m.

I saw this on my neighborhood front porch forum. I thought it would be some good information to pass on. The video is from their website. It's from a similar event in Ontario, Canada.

I am looking for community volunteers to deliver free compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulbs in their neighborhoods in Burlington, Colchester, Essex, Essex Junction and Winooski through an energy-saving initiative I am working on called Project Porchlight (http://www.projectporchlight.com).

Project Porchlight was started in Canada a few years ago. So far, Canadian volunteers have delivered more than 1.15 million free CFLs in their neighborhoods throughout the country, thereby saving more than $40 million in energy costs and decreasing CO2 emissions by about 232,300 tons.

We have 36,000 CFLs that need to be delivered in the five neighborhoods I mentioned above and only 6 staff to do it... Project Porchlight relies heavily on volunteers working within their neighborhoods to deliver free CFLs and spread the word about the energy saved by using them. Once the Project Porchlight bulbs are in use the collective saving for the residents in the five communities will be about $1.7 million on their electricity bills and about 2000 tons of coal will be prevented from being burned.

Our local Website is http://www.projectporchlight.com/burlington-vermont. People who would like to volunteer can go directly to the link http://projectporchlight.com/involved/volunteer

We also have our launch event on May 23rd at the Sheraton Hotel'sVermont Sports Expo at 5 p.m.
