    Going to the movies can be a passive activity: Buy a ticket, be seated and be entertained. But for more than three decades, the Vermont International Film Festival has used the cinematic arts to spark community conversation. This year's lineup showcases films from all over the world addressing hard-hitting, timely subjects, including refugee and LGBT issues. Among the highlights are Microbe and Gasoline, in which two young friends travel across France in a homemade vehicle; Miss Sharon Jones!, a documentary chronicling the soul singer's courageous battle with cancer; and Tanna, a fascinating story of star-crossed lovers on a remote Pacific island. So sit back, relax and enjoy the shows — then stick around to chat with filmmakers and fellow theatergoers.
