Re: “Obituary: Jasen Morin, 1974-2017

We've started a gofundme to defray the costs of *All the Things* for Jasen's Celebration of Life.
This fund will also offset travel expenses for some of Jasen's dearest friends to ensure they can be there. I'd hate to see anyone miss Jasen's services due to financial strain- and hope we can all raise the funds to Get Them There!

Re: “On a Big Stage, Sanders Counters Trump on Foreign Policy

Bernie was Chairman of the Senate VA Committee when the scandal hit. Only then did he start oversight hearings. Pretty much the way he would run the country, because he could care less for the people, as long as the Democrats could have a bloated government body to do everything...same government, by the way, that can't even deliver the mail on time....

Re: “Conservationists Unhappy After Scott Questions Wildlife Refuge Expansion

how are you sure we want the government to come in and own the land. OH please. The government isn't supposed to buy up our land.
THis land was not being exploited. it was once the means of putting folks to work..., not anymore.
Stop this tyranny.

I bought tickets to this and they say the concert is on Caturday, October 43rd. Seems legit though.

Re: “Vermont Food Truck Finder 2017

Dave, Foragers & Farmers is on University Place on the UVM campus. There is a green on the west side of University Place. It is the street where Ira Allen Chapel and Royall Tyler Theater are.

Re: “School: Vermont Teacher Fired for Demonstrating Nazi Salute to Third Graders

The teacher was not in a classroom, so let's stop with the "teaching history" angle here. It was probably something randomly inappropriate due to poor judgement, due to who knows? Poor as hell timing, in regards to the vandalism that has taken place in other parts of the state. Substitutes can be either very good, mediocre, or a bit whacked. I had an adopted daughter in the public school system, a child from Ethiopia, attending classes for the first time , 4th grade. When 9-11 happened, we kept our little ones away from the tv, and the horror of it. this sub art teacher had kids drawing the burning towers, describing the bodies jumping. My daughter comes home in a state of high anxiety. I did call the school, it was damn inappropriate for a sub with no training to introduce a subject that loaded. Since we do not know the entire story here, or if there was even an intent to indoctrinate (I highly doubt this), a reprimand would have sufficed. But, third grade , ouch. Now those kids know something they are not capable of comprehending. reminds me of a lot of adults around here. Capable of spouting off factoids with no history or context. WW2 history is not a third grade subject.

Re: “Back to School: Striking Burlington Teachers Reach Agreement With Board

The teachers have chosen to better their lives by investing in themselves and going into a well paid and comfortable career field, I wont fault them for looking after their own best interests.

I'm going to look after my own best interests by getting the hell out of Burlington once my lease is up. There's nothing in this town to entice a working class man to stay.

You suggest people channel their energy at the corrupt and greedy administration instead of the corrupt and greedy union, I'd rather channel it into finding a U Haul. I think that's the only way to see a return on my spent energy.

Re: “Vermont Food Truck Finder 2017

The article talks about Farmers & Foragers joining the UVM Green, then you do not have the UVM green in the calendar. Can you at least tell us the location of the UVM Green? The UVM map doesn't even list this location. Gotta love reporting in Vermont.

Re: “Walters: Another Hat for Don Turner

Lenore Broughton and the Breuers both have long histories of funding far right causes - including bankrolling anti-marriage equality campaigns here in VT and in MA.

What does it say about the Vermont Republican agenda that these are the folks underwriting their House candidates?

Re: “Nurse Shortage Puts Vermont Parents on the Hook for Kids' Care

Low pay and lack of benefits is part of the problem. The work also lacks interaction with other staff. Team work, mutual support and socially enjoyable time at work are missing. The work may be very routine and lacks the variety of interesting patients which keeps nurses challenged and learning. I also do not know how quiet a home care nurse must be while the rest of the family is sleeping in the same home. Many home health nurses prefer to make shorter visits with several patients during daytime hous. And nurses are usually paid extra for the inconvenience of working night shifts. As a medical professional, I would choose a hospital or nursing home setting for all of these reasons even if the pay was equivalent. Even with better pay, finding nurses who want to do this working with this schedule may continue to be difficult.

Re: “School: Vermont Teacher Fired for Demonstrating Nazi Salute to Third Graders

What was her intention? It might have been innocent. If that is the case, then her judgment was flawed, but a summary dismissal would be inappropriate. One steady characteristic of Puritans is the tendency to overdo, especially when it comes to punishment.

Re: “Back to School: Striking Burlington Teachers Reach Agreement With Board

For as long as I can remember, people have always complained how teachers make too much money, have too many benefits and too much time off. Normally, these complaints are from people that have no benefits at their jobs, lousy vacation packages and on a pay scale associated with the type of work they do. It's a choice. You too can go to college and spend thousands upon thousands of dollars to better yourself and choose a career that you want to be in. This applies not only to teachers but to doctors, dentists, and professional people who SPENT the money to further themselves into doing something they love to do. Not everyone has that opportunity to push forward in their life, but because they don't, they should not blame those that do and have managed to accomplish their dreams. The starting salary for a teacher in VT is approx. $35,000 with the average salary of teachers at approx. $52,000. That is after spending 4 years plus in college to get their degrees. Even after they do get their degree, it is then mandated by the State, courses that must be taken to keep up their licenses.
AND finally, if you want to complain about the Burlington educational department, why don't you question why the superintendent was given a $10,000 bonus this year. OR why the Burlington School Board paid so much to get him the VISA he needed to work at his position and make arrangements with UVM for him to work there in order to get the VISA. Now that he has it, let's see how long he stays there. Channel your energy there.

Re: “Thirteen-Year-Old Girl Takes Her Own Life at Brattleboro Retreat

I was there back in 1994. I was on Tyler Three, the adolescent unit. If not for the camaraderie with the other kids my depression would've gotten even worse. I met two staff members who actually gave a crap. Everyone else was aloof or just wanted the kids medicated. Notice how you NEVER see video or photos of that unit online? Hmmmmm.

We need to stop ALL the teachers from teaching history. We all know it makes you a bad person to see and hear such things.
