Representation of the character Shylock, a Jewish moneylender at the center of The Merchant of Venice, for example, has been criticized as anti-Semitic. In New York City-based collective Compagnia de’ Colombari’s production of this powerful play, founding director Karin Coonrod addresses the issue by casting five actors of different ethnicities, genders and ages to play Shylock, shedding light on various aspects of his character.
