Last year she won the “Labels for Libations” competition to create a Magic Hat Brewing Company beer label. Her delightful, whimsical illustrations of the natural world and the creatures that inhabit it adorn prints, greeting cards and small goods. Her work is carried at Vermont venues and select locations around the country. Polanshek’s drawings are realistic but imaginative: She puts bighorn sheep antlers on bears, bat wings on pigs, tortoise shells on bunnies. A selection of her delicately rendered fantasies from the wild is on view at Speeder & Earl’s Coffee. Pictured: “House of Fox.” at Speeder & Earl's Coffee in Burlington (map).

Where did you come from, anyway? was one of the last things the artist’s mother said to her before she died. The question is both the title of Musick’s 55-year retrospective, now on view at the Bennington Museum, and of the show’s signature work, pictured here. A departure from much of her earthy, nature-inspired sculpture, “Where Did You Come From Anyway?” presents the artist as defiant and individuated. As Musick writes, “My family came from Iowa farmland [and] were conservative and typical — but I was always different. I stand alone on an island beside a blue cornstalk. Although my feet are firmly rooted in the land, my head is in a pink cloud. The world, both vibrant and dark, swirls around me.” at Bennington Museum in Bennington. Manchester/Bennington (map).
