Furchgott Sourdiffe Gallery is currently exhibiting 18 artists whose styles and mediums vary significantly. What they have in common, according to the gallery, is an “intense focus on their subject matter.” Though that quality would seem like a given — all artists are focused on their work, no? — calling it out does pique one’s curiosity. Visitors to the Shelburne gallery can experience this creative intensity firsthand, whether it’s expressed as sunlight in a landscape, an interior fantasy or a particularly meditative abstraction. at Furchgott Sourdiffe Gallery in Shelburne. Simply brushing paint on paper apparently isn’t challenging enough for Bristol artist Karla Van Vliet. She’s developed a way of turning paintings into etchings — or at least they look that way. First she scores the surface; then she applies and removes paint, over and over. The paint fills in the lines to create form. And then, according to a description from Middlebury’s Jackson Gallery, Van Vliet “works with several recurring patterns and images that resonate in her.” As an artist and poet, she holds open lines of communication with the unconscious. A cofounder and editor of deLuge Journal, Van Vliet has published two books of poems and paintings; a new collection of her asemic writing is forthcoming from Shanti Arts Publishing in 2020. at Jackson Gallery, Town Hall Theater in Middlebury.
