'Crash to Creativity: The New Deal in Vermont'

'Crash to Creativity: The New Deal in Vermont'

    Tools

    Through Nov. 4

“Depression? What Depression?” So went the joke during the Great Depression in Vermont, a place already known for ruggedness and extreme New England thrift. This new exhibition at the Bennington Museum sheds light on how creativity flourished from 1934 to 1944 in the Green Mountain State, as government-funded New Deal initiatives provided work across fields, from artists and architects to construction workers. After Social Security was established in 1935, it was a Vermonter — Ida May Fuller of Ludlow — who received check 00-000-001 for $22.54. While not a depiction of Fuller herself, “Social Security” by Francis Colburn (pictured) imagines the elderly recipient of these much-needed benefits. at Bennington Museum in Bennington. For the past year, Winooski photographer Dan Higgins has worked with the Winooski Peace Initiative to create community portraits, ranging from folks gathering at the Winooski VFW to a Nepali dance group. Instead of simply sharing these images as they were, Higgins took the project a step further: Using digital manipulation, he projected each photo within the local built landscape, placing what are essentially imaginary photographic murals of the city’s people onto its walls. Fourteen of these altered images are currently on view at Scout & Co.’s Winooski café. “I’m hoping viewers will recognize the walls and be curious about the stories behind the pictures posted on them,” Higgins says. at Scout & Co.
