In the ’80s, 8084 rocked the Green Mountains with mondo power riffs and outrageous hairdos. Still active after three decades, the group embarked on its “Love Not Hate” tour in 2018, a campaign equally focused on rocking out and giving back. Fueled by compassion and empathy for the world’s injustices, the five-piece worked in conjunction with nonprofits and charitable organizations at each of the journey’s stops. The band also dropped a new single this year, the emotionally stirring “Why?” 8084 perform on Saturday, November 17, at ArtsRiot in Burlington. “Nature is a haunted house,” said Emily Dickinson, “but art is a house that tries to be haunted.” This passage serves to introduce Moss’ solo exhibition, “Landscape Mysteries,” now on view at the BigTown Gallery in Rochester. Creating entirely from memory, the artist and Dartmouth College studio art professor channels experiences and impressions of the natural environment through paint. “My work is often generated out of a distant memory of a physical setting that becomes a metaphor for a personal truth,” he says. As meditations on both wild spaces and psyche, his paintings are doubly haunted. “It is clear that I am trying to hold/reflect the lost moment,” Moss says, “break through the fence of time and reclaim what was given to me as a child on a first-time basis.” at BigTown Gallery in Rochester.
