Don’t confuse the name of the medium pastel with the results it produces. Though pink, baby blue and soft yellow are certainly options, pastel paintings are often wildly vibrant and dramatic. And mastery of pastel sticks, whether oil or chalk, requires considerable effort. Helping artists achieve that mastery is the mission of the Vermont Pastel Society, and a current exhibition of member works at the T.W. Wood Gallery in Montpelier puts their successes on display. at T.W. Wood Gallery in Montpelier. Barre/Montpelier (map).

Continuing an exploration she began during a 2015 residency in China, Cheney works accumulated papers — ticket stubs, receipts, fragments of old paintings — into multilayered constructions. In this way are her new works built from the past. Memories also inform O’Brien’s abstracted representational works, as she refers to photographs she’s taken to document places, times and moods. at T.W. Wood Gallery in Montpelier. Lois Eby

    Lois Eby

    Tools

    Through Sept. 27

“Studies in Rhythmic Vitality” is an apt title for Lois Eby’s energetic paintings. Her focus has long been calligraphic, non-objective mark making in ink against a field of ample white space. Her new works, now on view at the Supreme Court Gallery in Montpelier, were made with acrylic on birch panels, but are no less airy. Perhaps Eby plans her every move in advance, but her paintings seem more a visual cousin to improvisational jazz. at Vermont Supreme Court Gallery in Montpelier. Barre/Montpelier (map).
