“Breathe the Wind” at White River Gallery in South Royalton features the Norwich artist’s small gouache works on paper as well as larger oil paintings on panel and canvas. Perhaps it is Emlen’s background in graphic design that informs her cogent compositions, as well as the patchwork-like rearrangements of loosely rendered landscapes in some of her paintings. The latter are disconcerting, as if a portal to another world had opened up before our very eyes. Though taking her lead from observed reality, Emlen seems to suggest the not-seen quality of the natural world, and it is alluring. at White River Gallery in South Royalton. Randolph/Royalton (map).
