“Anatomy of a Pond” is an apt title for an exhibition of paintings by Adelaide Murphy Tyrol. The natural world — in this case a half-acre body of water on her Plainfield property — has long been a dominant inspiration. Her exhibition, which she calls a “visual biography,” explores the inhabitants of that pond, as well as how the light transforms it. She writes, “The artwork here is an inquiry and an homage to this constantly shifting landscape, both interior and exterior.” Indeed, from the large-scale commercial backdrops she paints in New York City to her intimate illustrations of flora and fauna close to home, Tyrol captures her subjects with both exacting realism and a sense of wonder. Of her paintings on view at Montpelier’s North Branch Nature Center, she writes, “I hope they impart a sense of the magic of our world — of what we look at every day and what blinks back at us.”
