    Seventy years ago, 16 young Québécois artists put forth “Le Refus global,” or “Total Refusal,” a cultural manifesto professing “an untamed need for liberation” and calling for “resplendent anarchy.” Today the document is considered a primary catalyst for Québécois social modernization. Among the signatories was Françoise Sullivan, an interdisciplinary artist whose decades of practice have spanned dance, performance art, painting and sculpture. This retrospective at the Montréal Museum of Contemporary Art familiarizes viewers with Sullivan’s oeuvre, paying homage to an artist integral to the development of Canadian culture in the 20th century. at Montréal Museum of Contemporary Art in Montréal.     The American sculptor is credited with inventing what is now a fixture of nurseries, children’s bedrooms and institutional lobbies everywhere: the mobile, as the artist’s hanging sculptures were first dubbed by Marcel Duchamp.
