Edgewater Gallery offers a taste of contemporary art in Canada through an exhibit of paintings, photography, sculpture and mixed-media works curated by Kelly Holt. Kathryn Lipke Vigesaa is a sculptor, filmmaker, bookmaker and photographer who spends time in both Montréal and Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom; she has been a professor and dean at Concordia University and exhibits her work internationally. “The land itself is a central catalyst for much of my artwork,” Vigesaa writes in an artist statement. Montréal-born Claire Desjardins, who now resides in the Laurentians, creates colorful abstractions that are, she writes, “an attempt to decipher the chatter in my head … to navigate through my everyday chaos toward calm.” Desjardins’ work has appeared in films and television series, and she has launched a collection of women’s apparel. Carol Kapuscinsky, from Ajax, Ontario, has been featured in solo and group exhibitions in Ontario and Québec, taught to students of all ages, and juried exhibitions across the country. A contemporary realist, she uses minimalist imagery to paint landscapes in oil. Kapuscinsky writes of her studio practice: “I’m back in the moment with the wind, the sounds and the exquisite beauty of nature. I find it an enormous responsibility to paint a field, a stream, a place, and do it justice.” at Edgewater Gallery in Stowe in Stowe. Stowe/Smuggs (map).

The Spruce Peak Performing Arts Center puts the “peak” in a current visual art exhibition. Though its title refers to the height in feet of Mount Mansfield, artists Trevor Corp, Daniel Schechner and Jackson Tupper were invited to respond to the concept of elevation far less literally. Curator Kelly Holt’s prompts included “an influencer of climate,” “how does pattern language enter the creative process?” and “ascend … form the angle … find the burn, and through it levitate.” The trio responded with photography, paintings, sculpture, prints, animation and collaborative works. at Spruce Peak Performing Arts Center, Stowe Mountain Resort in Stowe.
