“Almost Forgotten: Exploring the Overlooked Through Line, Shape and Texture,” currently on view in the Vermont Arts Council’s Spotlight Gallery, is a particularly evocative exhibition. Burnim’s loosely representative paintings are “informed by the passage of time, and the echo of what has been, by what is revealed in the weathered surface,” as she writes on her website. Her works reflect an attraction to banal, liminal spaces in the built environment and suggest both reverence and sadness. Burtnett, a longtime photographer and land conservationist, has in recent years been shooting details that defy a viewer’s literal comprehension. He has also mixed photographic images with other mediums, but his newest, almost playfully abstract works favor ink, indigo, graphite and oil stick on paper or board. Both artists’ creations allow viewers to experience wonder and contemplate evanescence. at Spotlight Gallery in Montpelier. Barre/Montpelier (map).
