Re: “An Expert Climber's Devastating Fall Leads to His Toughest Challenge

Thanks for reading Timothy! To be clear: Free solo climbing like Alex Honnold did in the recent movie is EXTREMELY dangerous. While it's true that free solo climbers are only relying on themselves, there are many external factors including rock fall, wildlife and sudden changes in weather that could cause even the most elite climbers to lose focus or become injured and fall. Hundreds of climbers rely on equipment in Vermont each year, and major equipment failures are exceedingly rare. Climbing with equipment is unquestionably safer than free solo climbing.

Re: “Lawmakers Want Reforms, Not New Prisons, to Bring Out-of-State Inmates Home

JohnGreenberg, thanks for your comment. DOC Commissioner Mike Touchette told me in an interview for this story that there are a very small number of inmates serving time for a "Big 12" offense who are eligible for release. Touchette said there are about half a dozen inmates in that group who are elderly and have health issues that are severe enough that the inmates aren't a danger to the community. This is known as "compassionate release" in the corrections field. I hope that helps!

Re: “Food Shortage, Money Woes Lead to Takeover of Three Senior Housing Facilities

Thanks for your comment, stellaquarta. I asked Commissioner Monica Hutt about that very issue at the press conference. She said DAIL does not have the power to prevent the sale of a licensed facility, but the department does require new owners to apply for a new license after the purchase (in other words, the license does not transfer automatically to the new owner). I don't have any information right now about what, if any, "red flags" emerged during that process.

Re: “Can Republican Newbie Alex Farrell Win a Senate Seat in Chittenden County?

btv4all: As the article states, Alex Farrell's father is named Tom.

The developer involved with the property formerly owned by Burlington College is named Eric Farrell. He is not the candidate's father. (Alex Farrell told me that Eric Farrell is a distant cousin.)
