Re: “Seven Days Wins 10 First-Place Awards, Including General Excellence, in Regional Media Competition

Congratulations to Seven Days! Judges' comments are right-on, and all of these awards are so well-deserved!! I never cease to be impressed.

Re: “All Eyes on Eva [SIV522]

So very cool, Eva! Congratulations and thanks for this SIVT! I had to force myself to watch the surgery part but am glad I did. I have baby cataracts myself and can't wait till they grow up so I can get them removed and see without glasses too. : )

Re: “Walters: Ex-Freeps Editor Finds a Friend on Fox News

Emily McManamy, you are spot on. John Walters, i disagree with your statement, "He lost his job because he worked for a cautious organization that knows it can't afford to alienate any of its remaining readers." (Besides, how do you know?) Read the code of ethics, read Gannett's social-media policy. I would expect (hope!) that had he tweeted favorably about the issue he also would have been let go. It's just not acceptable. He was a journalist and an editor, not an editorial columnist. He should have known better. The fact that he didn't tells me he never should have been in that position in the first place.

Re: “Anti-Social Media: Burlington Free Press Editor Tweets Himself Out of a Job

While I strongly disagree with Finley's opinions and political views, he certainly has a right to them. As a news journalist (i.e., not an opinion columnist), however, he has the responsibility to be 100% objective. By tweeting his opinions on these matters, he violated this cardinal principle. And clearly his tweets were in direct violation of Gannett's social-media policies, which can be read here: http://jimromenesko.com/2013/09/10/read-gannetts-social-media-policy-memo/. Without question these two factors are why he was fired -- not because his views are offensive and "politically incorrect."
