Re: “Burlington City Councilor Revives Noncitizen Voting Debate

Burlington City Councilor Revives ..... Tammany Hall ver 3.0. The Redux.

I am disappointed that 7 Days did not post the reason why the Montpelier Charter Change was punted by the Senate. It is no secret or is this just a pot stirring article?

So many legal reason why this can not happen:

-Vermont is a Republic, not a Democracy
- Vermont is a "Dillon rules" state
-The "Catch-22" clause of the Vermont Constitution
-SS 42. of the Vermont Constitution
-"Equal application" clause of the Vermont Constitution
-8 SCOVT cases setting precedence in one way or the other about voting, citizens or governmental rules on town charters and citizens.

I find the biggest laugh is the argument,"Taxation without Representation" for a reason to pass this. Well those that say that have a reading comprehension issue or ignorance of history. The taxation and representation statement was made by British Citizens, living in a British Colony, paying British Taxes, not being allowed a seat in the British Parliament.

Re: “Sara Holbrook Community Center's Namesake Linked to Eugenics Movement

Renaming the center should not be an option. That type of decision WILL have negative effects on future donations to non-profits.
Who would want to donate or start a charity in their honor only to have it renamed because of something that might be viewed in the future as unpopular.

John Smith donates $200 million to a new cancer center in his name.

Fast forward to 100 years in the future.....

"John Smith ate meat and that is unacceptable now so we must rename the building."

Be happy that these people donated and end it at that.

BTW You should not buy VW's, that company was founded by Adolf Hitler.
and Planned Parenthood was founded by Sanger, a supporter and researcher of eugenics.

Re: “Red Flags in the Green Mountains: How VT's 'Extreme Risk' Gun Law Is Working

Good article, but I would have to say that both the magazine law and UBC are failures. The UBC is a failure by the numbers you presented compared to the numbers that were presented to both the Senate and House committees by those supporting UBC, stating private sales and transfers in Vermont were 4800-5000 sales per year. If so, your graph should have jumped by those numbers and be a lot more than an increase of 49!
As for the magazine law, great economic booster for the gun shops along the CT river valley in NH! Multiple stores have given interviews to NH papers and gun magazines that they have doubled sales, especially cash sales. On my way to Maine this summer I stopped by a store in NH and saw that over half their cars had VT plates. Also, really?! The only case of someone breaking the law was a white nationalist in Bennington?!

I would say these two laws hands down were failures.

Re: “As Hundreds Protest ICE, Border Patrol Runs a Checkpoint

Protesting ICE is like protesting the police about speed limit laws.
Why are they not protesting Leahy, Welch or Sanders? They wrote and voted for the laws.
How many of these protesters voted for the above politicians?

Re: “Crumbling Local Roads Fuel Talk of a Vermont Gas Tax Hike

STOP raising taxes on the working class!
Sorry Rep. McCormack but not all of us can afford a fuel efficient vehicle.

@Seven Days, why don't you break out where the current VT Fuel taxes go here in the state. 100% of the tax does not go to the DOT.

Why doesn't the state stop diverting the fuel tax to the general fund and put it toward the roads?
