Re: “Walters: Vermont Senate Approves No-Nukes Resolution

"Why is an issue NOW?" you ask?

It's because being nuclear capable is one thing. But the F35s being named as the part of the nuclear delivery force, along with the B2 and B52 bombers, is something completely different and changes the conversations exponentially.

All F35As -- even the ones that are scheduled to be based here (actually forced here against the will of the people) will receive Block 4 upgrades to include nuclear weapon readiness. So says the USAF.

Re: “New Airport Noise Map Is Not Expected to Lead to More Home Demolitions

Just another example of how the F35s will exert extreme negative environmental, health, safety impacts on thousands of Vermonters in order to expand militarism in our state and benefit a tiny fraction of the population. Vermonters don't want this flawed and dysfunctional plane that has had 2 CRASHES in the last six months and multiple engine fires prior to that.

WHY aren't the Mayor of Burlington and VT's congressional delegation calling for a halt in the basing until more flight hours are accumulated and a proven safety record established?

Re: “New Airport Noise Map Is Not Expected to Lead to More Home Demolitions

Why the hell does the school district have to "pay 10 percent of the cost in order for the airport to seek FAA grant funding."? Neither the schools nor the homeowners have a choice that these obscenely loud and dangerous warplanes are being based in their backyards, but the HAVE TO PAY for noise mitigation??? How is this moral, right or fair?

Re: “Northern Front: Progs See an Opening in Burlington's Most Conservative District

It has been amusing to note that Kurt Wright has decided that he lost his election because he was too "moderate". It's has also been interesting that his list of possible reasons why he was not re-elected does not include any mention of his aggressive support of the F35 basing, which a majority of Burlington voters voted to ban in 2017.

Not only did he campaign in support of the flawed basing decision, but he, Dave Hartnett and Jane Knodell tried to subvert the language of the resolution that 3,000 Burlington voters had signed onto. When that didn't work, he opposed putting it on the ballot at all, rejecting the voices of the people he served. (His attitude towards vetoing the voter's voices has become a pattern, as seen with the subsequent Keep City Park Green ballot initiative.)

Perhaps it was his untenable support for the destructive, inappropriate, unpopular F35 mission, one that will harm thousands of Vermonters, that got him the boot? It was pretty likely that it at least was a factor, but will Wright ever admit it? Doubtful.

Perhaps he should have heeded the warning that was directed to him at one of last March's City Council meeting about the F35 ballot, "Hell hath no fury like a voter scorned."

The F35s are Vermont WRONG!

Re: “Longtime Councilor Knodell Loses Progressive Nomination

In 2013, Jane Knodell betrayed the voters of Burlington. She ran on and was elected on a platform that opposed the F35 basing, and repeatedly promised her Progressive supporters to reject the F35 basing by voting to limit the noise of aircraft at the Burlington Airport. However, when the time for the vote came, she instead abandoned her constituents and her integrity by voting to support the basing. Apparently she was offered the Council's future chairperson position by the Mayor and the Democratic council members, in exchange for her honor and her soul. I hope she feels shame at her actions. Hopefully we won't all live to regret Jane's betrayal and the dangerous and inappropriate basing of the F35s will still be stopped, and Jane and the others who voted for this fiasco won't have to have blood on their hands when this inadequately tested bomber jet crashes in our residential neighborhoods. Perhaps shame is too inadequate a word for what they should feel...

Re: “F-35 Burlington Ballot Question Spurs Debate, Influx of Ad Spending

Seven Days please note: your article states that Pomerleau "reiterated the Air Force's claim that the F-35 is the Vermont Air National Guard's "only mission".

This is uncategorically false (or "bullshit" as Pomerleau is fond of sayiing). It is NOT the Air Force's claim that the F35 is the "only mission" for our Guard. That "only mission" falsehood comes from the F35 supporters, not the Air Force, which is the actual entity that provides VTANG with its missions. It's unfortunate that the writer of this article did not refute this oft repeated claims of the F35 supporters.

For factual reporting, here is what the Air Force officially stated in its EIS, and later re-confirmed in federal court:

"If there is no F-35a operational beddown at Burlington AGS, the current mission would continue."
(Revised DEIS Appendix E #PA-16, page PA-47 )

The AF also stated in federal court that, " there could have been any number of reasonable alternatives available to the Air Force on how to configure Burlington.
(Federal court records (Case No 5:14-cv-132, Defendants Memo in Opposition to Plaintiffs Motion), March 7, 2016, page 59-60)

Pomerleau does not speak for the AF, and neither does VTANG leadership. Please keep this in mind as the barrage of television and print ads start to fill your eyes and ears in this last week before the Burlington vote.

Please VOTE YES! on Ballot Item #6 to save our skies from the F35s!

Re: “At Endorsement Event, Weinberger Supporters Rebut Rival Driscoll

Mittens, perhaps you won't give Miro so much credit for "repairing" the financial stability of the city when it was he and his cronies on the Burlington Airport Commission who stole money from Burlington Telecom to finance the illegal second floor of the BTV Airport parking garage. Millions of dollars were mis-allocated and with the resulting scandal and fines, the city's bond rating was trashed, worse than Detroit, Michigan. So maybe give him minimal credit for negotating some of the debt, but don't forget that Miro was the one who created the fiscal mess with his illegal actions. His time on the Commission also coincided with the beginning of VT Air Guard operations that changed the use of afterburners from 20% to 95% of the time, necessitating the purchase of 200 SoBu residential homes. This is just what he and his friend Ernie Pomerleau (Sen. Leahy's cousin-in-law) orchestrated so that the Airport could get FREE land at SoBu's expense to start building commercial developments around the airport entrance. This deception and deceit continued as Vermont was "selected" for the F35 basing, despite scoring much less that other sites. Miro's hands have been filthy since day one of his mayorship and he continues to support the dangerous F35 basing that will negatively impact thousands of Vermonters, and harm young children and the elderly the most. Shame on you, Miro.
