Re: “Smokin' Mirrors: Shumlin's $116,000 E-Cigarette Lesson

I switched to E-Cigarettes over four years ago after a decades long smoking habit. Now, I can ride my bicycle hours on end without losing my breath. That's all the convincing that I need. Let’s see, “There are approximately 600 ingredients in cigarettes. When burned, they create more than 7,000 chemicals. At least 69 of these chemicals are known to cause cancer, and many are poisonous.” (American Lung Association) E-Cigarettes contain 2-4 ingredients (nicotine is optional) and don’t burn anything. These ingredients have been well studied. The FDA regards vegetable glycerin and propylene glycol (the diluents) as generally safe; they are commonly used in medications, food, fog machines etc. Nicotine is not classified as a carcinogen. That leaves the flavorings. Typically, food grade candy flavorings are used. I took online tours of several candy factories. These folks are exposed to candy fumes 8 hours a day, 5 days a week. None of the workers were wearing respirators. But then, I read all the fear-mongering about E-Cigarettes. I read about battery mishaps. Countless devices operate off of batteries and occasionally there are failures either due to misuse or faulty products. Does anyone condemn an entire industry when Sony recalls laptops due to a fire hazard or when an iPad explodes? I read about flavors attracting children. This seems more like a matter of personal responsibility and proper parenting. Keep the liquor and E-Cigarettes out of the reach of children. Of course, you can always buy Nicotine Gum and Lozenges (in various flavors) without a prescription. So long as Big Pharma is the supplier of the nicotine, no problem. Hey kids; who wants gum? I read about second hand vapor fears. Then, I read a study that eliminates that as a concern: I’d be more worried about diesel fumes; they are known to contain carcinogens. Most school buses run on diesel! No one can claim E-Cigarettes are completely safe; who can claim that about anything (sugar, caffeine, whatever)? When you consider the alternative for many, just smoke and die, E-Cigarettes seem like a wise choice. You would think that most people would embrace a product that has the potential to reduce cancer, emphysema and myriad other diseases linked to smoking. If for no other reason, think of the savings in health cost. Makes me wonder about the true motives of those adamantly opposed to E-Cigarettes?
