That's ridiculous. David Lynch's adaptation of "Dune" was hampered by meddling studio executives, and Lynch himself took some liberties with the source material. But as a sci-fi film in its own right it is unique and visionary, and I say that as someone who thinks Frank Herbert's novel is the greated sci-fi book ever written.
