View ProfilesIt is great to hear about these passive houses in Vermont, but let's not forget that location is important when you are considering total energy consumption in a household. Transportation costs must be figured in as well. The Natural Resources Defense Council has found that an average in-town house outperforms even the greenest sprawl house with a hybrid car. Fortunately, the Charlotte home that is featured in this article is in a village where the residents can walk to the general store, deli, post office, library, town hall, child care center and senior center.

Charlotte has tried for decades to avoid the bad zoning examples that surround it that promote strip development and traffic congestion. That doesn't mean the town has found the answer and that there aren't improvements that can be made to the zoning. But give the town a little credit for promoting the concentration of commercial into its two village centers and a small industrial/commercial area avoiding the costly and unsightly results elsewhere on Route 7.
