Re: “A South Burlington Nonprofit Aims to Recycle Every Tennis Ball in America

Penelope,

I think there are varying times that tennis balls are used depending on the individual tennis players involved. The sad truth is that 125 Million tennis balls find their way into our landfills every year regardless of how the timing may work out. As a regular near daily "club" tennis player, I along with many peers in the US tennis community tend to prefer starting most matches with a new can. After several sets, the balls do not tend to play as consistently as a new can. I wish this were not the case. I think that changing an existing long-developed habit of trashing tennis balls to recycling them may be a lot easier than asking many players in this country to simply continue using balls that have been played for a short time. A visit to any tennis facility in this country will drive home the fact that tennis balls are in many cases... single use. Given existing realities, asking players to recycle these may be our best hope towards solving a serious problem.
